abstract

The Algonquin College Health and Wellness Research Centre officially launched in January 2013 with a focus in the area of Medical Assistive and Analytical Devices. The Centre is supported through a 5 year $2.3M Innovation Enhancement grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The Centre leverages the College's vast array of services and capabilities to assist entrepreneurs, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs), large companies and community partners to develop products, processes and services within the sector. This presentation will provide an overview of the Centre, the process for selecting and funding new projects, examples of various medical devices projects currently underway and also highlight various opportunities for collaboration.

biography

Kevin Holmes is a medical device specialist with a background in Electro-Mechanical Design Engineering. After a brief stint in the high-tech field, he joined the University of Ottawa's Artificial Heart Research Laboratory in 1990. He served at the Director level in the lab's first start-up venture (World Heart Corporation) which was listed on both the Toronto Stock Exchange and NASDAQ in 1996. WorldHeart grew rapidly to include facilities in Canada, US and EU and provided lifesaving technology to patients around the globe. In 2005, he returned full time to the University of Ottawa with a focus on promotion of an enhanced medical devices sector for Canada and development of related educational programs. In 2012 he joined Algonquin College to oversee the Health and Wellness Research Centre.
