The rapid adoption of electronic health records in hospitals throughout North America over the last decade has created tremendous opportunities for digital tools to aid in patient care. At the same time, the volume, quality, and disparate nature of the digital health data poses its own set of challenges - and even simple clinical metrics can reveal surprises when viewed in the context of a larger data-set. This presentation will discuss one successful approach to validating 'soft' clinical data and fusing it with 'hard' clinical data to provide powerful real-time insights into a patient's condition.

Joseph Beals is Vice President of Informatics at PeraHealth, Inc. where he has worked since 2010. He sits at the intersection of research and implementation helping translate technology solutions into clinical outcomes. Joe received an Sc.B. from Brown University and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, where he was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. He has peer-reviewed publications in fields as diverse as medical predictive analytics, quantum electrodynamics, photonic systems, neural-engineering, and fluid mechanics, and holds a patent in high-bandwidth optical data routing.
